LUNGS

The start of Florence + the Machine's career began 2 years before the release of ‘Lungs’, with their EP ‘A Lot of Love, A Lot of Blood’, winning them the acclaimed ‘British Breakthrough Act’ at the 2008 BRIT Awards. The pressure was high, and the band hit a home run with the release of ‘Lungs’ the following year in July 2009. With some of the band's most iconic songs, the album rocketed to number one and world-wide success. Having sold over 3 million copies world-wide, and being certified 5x platinum in the United Kingdom, it truly changed the way British artists made music.

CEREMONIALS

After the raging success of Lungs, the world didn't have to wait long for Florence + the Machine's sophomore album Ceremonials. It was recorded at the legendary Abbey Road Studios and released on the 31st October 2011, debuting at number 1 in the UK album chart. It became the first of the band’s albums to be Grammy-nominated, and went multi-platinum in Australia, and platinum in the UK. Its accompanying tour ‘The Ceremonials Tour’ sold out many of its arena shows, and received some of the best critical praise of 2011 and 2012.

HOW BIG, HOW BLUE, HOW BEAUTIFUL

Although Florence took a 2 year hiatus to ground herself away from touring, she found herself instead facing an upheaval of emotions. As it turns out, the purgatory of romantic uncertainty brings not only pain, but also a certain measure of creativity. Returning in June 2015 with the band’s 3rd UK (and first US) number 1 album, Florence crooned and raged, exorcising her emotions by taking a turn towards a more frank sound. Together with director Vincent Haycock, an oxymoronic metaphorical visual album ‘The Odyssey’ was born, detailing Florence’s ascent from purgatory and into freedom.

HIGH AS HOPE

HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE TO DIE SO YOU CAN FEEL LOVED? DO YOU FEEL LOVED?

Whilst the previous era reflected heavily on the extrinsic toxicity of Florence’s relationships with people, substances and conflicting emotion, two years later, ‘High As Hope’ signified a page-turn in Florence’s thoughts around her past. The band’s forth album is perhaps their more introspective, considered, and pragmatic album yet. As Florence described at the point of its release, ‘High As Hope’ is a record that explores many feelings, often dark and heavy themes including eating disorders and the perils of the internet. However, amongst all of those, remains a glimmer of hope.

DANCE FEVER

Recorded with the music of the 1970 and ’80s in mind, Florence + the Machine return with a 14-song extravaganza of energy, fury, deep introspection and most of all, dance. Florence Welch herself calls this a “fairytale in 14 songs”. Produced by Florence Welch, Dave Bayley [Glass Animals] and Jack Antonoff [Lorde / Taylor Swift], the album touches on raw themes of divided love, fame, female identity and empowerment, centred in a time when the Coronavirus pandemic forced us all into new ways of thinking and being
